Modeling & Fabrication
Each layer of the shape was surface modeled in rhino for 3D printing. A crucial aspect of the design was achieving an ethereal glowing effect, and so I designed the outer shell to be faceted and 3D printed out of a clear filament to diffuse the internal LEDs accordingly. Each component was then hand sanded and coated with XTC3D before spray painting.
Rather than use a simple white box as the base as what was expected, I wanted to continue the visual language of the shapes to the base. I thus designed two stands out of PVC and acrylic, and machined two aluminum base supports to ground a transparent rod, creating a floating effect for the shapes to rest on.
The parts were assembled with 4-40 screws and hot glue dots for easy disassembly and maintenance.
